Volunteer Opportunities
Gallery Greeter
Serve as a friendly presence in the galleries, helping visitors navigate their museum experience while learning more about RAM’s collection and exhibitions.
Garden and Grounds Assistant
Help with the annual spring clean-up outdoors. Guidance will be provided and volunteers are asked to bring gardening tools, including rakes, pruners, and lopers.
Docent
Guide scheduled tours, school field trips, and special events. Docents are specially trained during curator-led tours at the opening of each new exhibition at RAM and Wustum.
Facilitate engaging conversations.
Docents play an essential role in engaging the community with the exhibitions and collections at RAM Downtown and RAM Wustum. As tour guides, educators, and museum ambassadors, docents invite guests to look closely, ask questions, share ideas, and discover personal connections with art.
Through sharing stories about the work on display, docents encourage exploration, conversation, and creative thinking while helping visitors experience art in ways that are inspiring, accessible, and memorable.

Volunteer Requirements
General requirements
- Must be 16 years or older (RAM reserves the right to conduct background checks on individuals age 18 years and older.)

A passion for art, a desire to learn, and an interest in engaging with others are the most important qualifications. On-site training is provided, so volunteers of all experience levels can feel prepared to engage with visitors.
Docent specific requirements
- New docents must attend 6 introductory training sessions to build foundational knowledge and tour facilitation skills.
- Participate in scheduled docent meetings to stay connected, informed, and engaged with museum programs and initiatives.
- Attend exhibition walkthroughs to develop familiarity with current exhibitions and deepen understanding of the artwork on view.
- Commit to leading or supporting a minimum of 20 tours and/or museum events each year.
- Participate in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) training, as well as dementia awareness and accessibility trainings.
- Continue expanding knowledge and skills by attending additional training opportunities, art enrichment tours, lectures, classes, and other museum learning experiences.
- Consider becoming a member of Racine Art Museum to further support the museum’s mission and community programs.

Corporate and community groups can support RAM through hands-on volunteer opportunities, including seasonal garden and grounds projects, event support, and other museum initiatives.
