About the artwork.
Prior to immigrating to the U.S. from Mexico in 1923, Alfredo Ximenez worked as a commercial artist. In addition to creating artwork for the WPA, Ximenez had jobs as a cartoonist in New York and as an animator in a Hollywood studio. He created prints that reflected both his heritage—Mexican workers, dancers, and landscapes—and the scenes of his new home, such as the waterfront skyline of this etching.
