About the artwork.
Born in Philadelphia to Puerto Rican parents, Roberto Lugo draws on his upbringing to meld classical pottery forms with imagery referencing social issues. Lugo often incorporates portraiture of people of color onto the surfaces of his vessels including himself, his family, and political, cultural, and historical figures. The Queen and I depicts a portrait of American abolitionist Harriet Tubman on one side and a portrait of the artist on the reverse.
