Still Life with Detritus

Beth Lipman is renowned for sculptural compositions that depict the bounty and luxury of Renaissance and Baroque still-life paintings – specifically those created in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century. Works, such as this one comprised of clear glass vessels and food arranged on a table, tackle subjects such as mortality, materiality, and temporality. Drawing attention to the fragile nature of existence, Lipman incorporated broken elements, including pieces strewn on the floor.
