About the artwork.

Working as the result of a federal program meant to provide useful employment to Americans during the Great Depression in the 1930s, photographers associated with the WPA tended to produce “straightforward” documentary images. Andrew Herman’s photographs representing labor and industry could be read as commentary about those who have to work hard for a living—in context of when they were produced, that work was possibly a source of pride as so many were struggling economically.
