About the artwork.

Peruvian American artist Kukuli Velarde addresses colonization and identity in her ceramic work. Velarde focuses on Latin American history as a point of reference, describing it as “the reality with which I am familiar.” This work is from the series, Plunder Me, Baby—a title that suggests subversion, aggression, wariness, and playfulness as well as self-awareness. It is a kind of self-portrait where she uses her face as a way to create links between past and present.
