About the artwork.
Geoffrey Gorman attributes his connection to animals and his fondness for found materials to a childhood spent roaming the barns and woods around his Maryland home. To create works such as Melanotus, he researches animal species and looks for what he describes as “caught in the moment” poses to echo. As he works, Gorman imagines a story for every animal—blending fantasy, imagination, and scientific information.
