About the artwork.
Ai Kijima has translated early experiences knitting, crocheting, and sewing with her grandmother in Japan into a practice that combines traditional and original quilting techniques. Most drawn to the “easily discarded” textiles she can find in thrift stores and flea markets—such as sleeping bags, bed sheets, and boxer shorts, elements of which are found in Groovy Valentine—Kijima builds new worlds where the pop culture imagery that pervades contemporary life produces new and unexpected narratives.
