About the artwork.

Known for large-scale public sculpture that both drew from and challenged perceptions of Mexican American culture, Luiz Jiménez here depicts a Great-tailed Grackle, a bird native to the Southwest and Texas known for its blue coloration, distinctive call, urban dwelling, and boisterous behavior. With Chula, Jiménez both suggests a satirical link between the bird and loud men who might call out to pretty women on the street and references a raven named Chula that he had as a companion.
